I did the Flåmsbana train ride in Norway from Flåm to Myrdal, which went up a steep incline from the ocean to mountain tops in under an hour. It is a very famous ride among train enthusiasts and Norwegians who have already done it. Of the relatives we visited, probably about half had done the ride, and twet all raved about it.
This is most of the town of Flåm; yes, it's that small. I left out about three buildings, but yeah. Population of just under 400 people. The train rises 866 meters in 20 kilometers of track with the steepest incline being 55%. It is famous mostly for pretty views and some unique train stuff such as the wooden tunnels.
